So what did I get? How about a 1936 vintage South Bend 9 inch lathe
with all the trimmings! Back then they really made things in this
country. Things that lasted. It was solid and heavy ? tended to stay
where you put it. Despite it?s age it is still very accurate.
It is however a VERY manual machine. To change speeds you must
move the drive belt to the appropriate set of sheaves. To change from
turning to threading you must swap out gears in the head stock as you
need to do to change thread pitch.
How do you know which gears to use and in what arrangement? There
is a table riveted (yes riveted) to the headstock gear cover that tells you
? pretty neat! . Continues on page 38
Above: An incredible hulk, Stans' 1936 vintage South Bend 9 inch lathe
came with all the trimmings. Solid and heavy, this very accurate machine
tends to stay where you put its several hundred pounds of cast iron and
steel.
