So what did I get? How about a 1936 vintage South Bend 9 inch lathe
        with  all  the  trimmings!   Back  then  they  really  made  things  in  this
        country.  Things  that  lasted.   It  was  solid  and  heavy  ?  tended  to  stay
        where you put it. Despite it?s age it is still very accurate.
        It  is  however  a   VERY  manual  machine.   To  change  speeds  you  must
        move the drive belt to the appropriate set of sheaves.  To change from
        turning to threading  you must swap out gears in the head stock as you
        need to do to change thread pitch.
         How do you know which gears to use and in what arrangement? There
        is a table riveted (yes riveted) to the headstock gear cover that tells you
        ? pretty neat! . Continues on page 38
