Herod the Great
Who was Herod?
Herod reached the kingship in 37 BCE. He
was born to an important Edomite family in
Ashkelon. The family had good
connections with the Romans and they
helped Herod to reach the kingship.
Herod kills Miriam and her entire family
Before Herod there were kings from the Hasmonean family and Herod was a
foreigner in the Jewish people.
Herod felt that he had many opponents and led a rule of dictatorship.
Immediately when he rose to power, he killed 45 (people) from the heads of the
distinguished families in Israel. After that he killed 21 of the members of the
Sanhedrin.
He married Miriam from the Hasmonean family in order that the nation of Israel
would accept him as king, but then he began to fear that she and her family
members want to kill him. So Herod killed Miriam and her entire family.
Herod was a king who built and developed Jerusalem and Israel.
He rebuilt the Temple, (and) built big buildings in Jerusalem and in Israel.
The Sages said: Whoever did not see the building of Herod – never saw a
beautiful building!
