The "Sigd" Holiday
The Ethiopian Jews heard about Jerusalem all their lives, and always dreamed
to immigrate to Israel and to arrive in Jerusalem.
Every year, seven weeks after Yom Kippur, in Ethiopia they celebrated the
"Sigd" holiday. The "Sigd" holiday was the holiday of yearnings for Jerusalem
and of the dream to arrive there. All of the community would go up on a high
mountain, and there they would read the Torah and pray.
Today, in Israel, Ethiopian immigrants arrive from all over the country to
celebrate the "Sigd " here, together, in Armon HaNatziv.
Another important day for Ethiopian immigrants in Israel is Yom
Yerushalayim. For the Jews of Ethiopia, this day is also the Memorial Day for
all the Jews of the community that died on the hard journey from Ethiopia to
Israel.
