The Synagogue
The synagogue was a regular room that on the Shabbat turned into a
synagogue. All of the Jewish prisoners came to the synagogue. They
came because they were happy to meet their Jewish friends, they
wanted to know what is new, and everyone wanted to meet the rabbi
of the prison, Rabbi Aryeh Levin.
Rabbi Aryeh Levin was a righteous rabbi who came to the prison for
twenty years on the Shabbat and holidays. Also in the rain and in the
snow he always arrived at the prison from his house in Nahlaot. The
rabbi was an elderly Jew and it was very hard for him to walk, but he
did not miss a single Shabbat. The rabbi would speak with the
prisoners, pray with them and take from them regards to their families.
After the prayers he would go on foot to all of the families and deliver
to them the regards. He would remember by heart every regards and
receive from the families regards in order to say to the prisoners on
the next Shabbat.
There are many stories about the righteous rabbi and we want to tell
here just one of them:
On one Shabbat, the rabbi saw one prisoner sitting on the side, very
sad. The rabbi asked the prisoner why he is sad and the prisoner
answered that everyone has families outside, that write to them and
visit them, and he has no one because all of his family died in the
Holocaust. The rabbi spoke with him a little and comforted him, and
then next time that visitors came to the prisoners, suddenly the
prisoner heard his name. The prisoner got up and thought that it is a
mistake. He went to the yard and met there a religious young man.
He asked the young man: "Who are you?" The young man said: "I am
the son of Rabbi Aryeh Levin. Father told us about you and I want to
be your family." From that day the son of Rabbi Aryeh Levin
continued to visit the prisoner and to encourage him.
