4- Stomach
Functions of the stomach:
a. Stores food.
b. Mix food with gastric secretion.
c. Initiates digestion of proteins.
d. Kills bacteria due to HCl.
e. Moves food (chyme) into intestine.
f. Minor role in digestion & absorption of nutrients.
Gastric secretions
• The human stomach secretes 1 - 2 L of gastric juice per day.
• The gastric mucosa, which produces these secretions, is divided into 2 functional
regions.
•
1. Oxyntic gland area
• Located in the proximal 80% of the stomach.
• These glands consist of three types of cells:
Stomach cells Secretions
mucous
Mucous neck A thick layer of mucus adheres to the wall of the stomach
cells
gastric mucosal barrier protect the gastric mucosa from injury
by the corrosive actions of HCl & pepsin.
