SYLLABUS REVIEWS & APPEALS

Kent State University’s Credit Transfer Office believes in social justice for every transfer student. It is our goal to ensure
that every student can maximize their prior learning experiences to find the most efficient way towards a Kent State
University degree. As such, it is our mission to ensure that every prior course is given a fair opportunity for equivalency
review. Below is our three-step credit evaluation process.

        Review Process Overview

            1. Initial evaluation: The Credit Transfer Office performs the initial step that determines credit transferability. The
official Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) includes, but is not limited to:
                   a. Accreditation
                   b. Final course grade
                   c. Course level: this includes determination of remedial status, undergraduate level, lower division, upper
                       division and more
                   d. Kent Core University Requirement applicability
                   e. Credit hour conversion to semester hours
Courses that aren’t initially determined equivalent are given elective credit based on the course level at the
sending institution. Further review of these courses can be done with appropriate syllabus and documentation.
Applicability to a student’s major program is determined in the major college. Student’s should make an
advising appointment to discuss how their credits apply to their program.
            2. Syllabus Review Request: A student can request a review of a course syllabus after the student has met with
their program advisor to review how transfer credits have been applied to their Kent State major program. If
there are courses that have transferred as elective credits and the advisor can see the potential for the course
to meet a Kent State requirement, then a syllabus can be submitted by the advisor to be reviewed by the
appropriate faculty through our “Credit Review Process”. It is recommended that the student submit syllabi
within 90 days from the “Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE)” email. Once we have received the syllabus from the
advisor, the student can expect a response within 30 days.
            3. Transfer Credit Appeal: Appealing how credits/courses transferred (or did not transfer) to the Kent State
student record can only be done after steps 1 and 2 have been completed. The student must first refer to all
transfer policies in the current Kent State University catalog before submitting an appeal. See catalog.kent.edu
for the Academic Policy on Transfer of credits. Appeals must be submitted to the Credit Transfer Office in
writing with appropriate documentation and supporting information detailed in a letter/email. We may ask for
further information or resources from the student before beginning the appeal process.
                   a. Kent State timing policy: A student disagreeing with the application of transfer and articulated credit by
Kent State University must file his/her appeal in writing within ninety (90) days of the “Transfer Credit
Evaluation (TCE)” OR within (30) days after receiving the decision in step 2. Our office shall respond to
the appeal within thirty (30) days of receipt of the fully detailed appeal. Any delays in review will be
communicated to the student throughout the process.
