Chapter Two
Joining Knots (Bends)
squAre KnOT
Also called a reef knot, this fundamental joining
knot is well suited for binding two pieces of cord-
age of equal diameter or two ends of the same piece
of cordage (as when a package is tied with twine).
Remember: right over left, left over right.
This is the knot to use when you want to easily
untie the ropes. However, that ease of untying also
makes the square knot less secure than other bends.
Do not use this for jobs where failure is not an option!
It can be backed up by adding more knots to the
working ends, but there are better choices.
1. start with the right rope over the left rope. The right rope
wraps under the left hand rope.
