l (-)- Hyoscine (Scopolamine)
Properties
It is the major alkaloid in Duboisia and scopolia species and Datura metel. It
is laevorotatory, it occurs as syrupy liquid. Enzymatic hydrolysis with lipase yields
L tropic acid and scopine.
Scopolamine HBr is the most commonly used salt for medicinal purposes.
Uses
The action of scopolamine differs from that of hyoscyamine and atropine in that
there is no central nervous system stimulation, BUT rather a narcotic or sedative
effect predominates.
Hyoscine HBr is used as Sedative .1
Hyoscine base transdermally as antiemetic after surgery .2
Its benzoate ester used in treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). .3
Tropane alkaloids with quaternary nitrogen
Hyoscine N-butylbromide
