Tropane alkaloids are ester alkaloids which on hydrolysis yield an organic
acid and an amino alcohol as a base. Tropane, the parent base of the
alkaloids, consists of seven membered bicyclic ring with a nitrogenous
bridge between C1 & C5.

Tropane nucleus
The major tropane alkaloids of pharmacological and therapeutic importance
can be classified into two main groups.
I- Solanaceous tropane alkaloids.
II- Coca alkaloids.
I- Solanaceous tropane alkaloids
The term solanaceous alkaloids is generally restricted to the alkaloids of the
tropane nucleus, although a number of some genera of the family Solanaceae
contain non-tropane alkaloids e.g. capsaicine, solanine, nicotine etc. Because of
their mydriatic effect, the tropane solanaceous alkaloids are also referred to as
“mydriatic alkaloids”.
