These agents are known sensitizers and can cause a drug-induced ACD superimposed on the existing ACD.
If the patient requires nighttime sedation because of itching, then first-generation oral antihistamines can
be used.
If itching is not alleviated, referral to a primary care provider for further care may be indicated.
What about using anti-histamines for Atopic dermatitis (AD) !!!???
Antihistamines may help with sleep disruption due to itching but have limited effect on the eczema itself.
Side effects (Counseling tips)
Sedation and Drowsiness (Patient Counseling??)
Dry mouth and eyes .
Blurred vision .
Constipation .
Difficulty urinating
Contraindications (ask for patient history)
Narrow angle glaucoma
Prostatic hypertrophy
Caution with geriatrics
4- Miscellaneous (OTC)
Keratin softeners: Hydroxyacids (Glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and malic acid, and Salicylic acid)
Astringents (Burow's solution, calamine)
Local anesthetics (lidocaine 4%, benzocaine 20%) (Sensitizing potential)
Astringents are applied mainly for oozing lesions. They precipitate skin protein serving as a protective coating.
