    Minor Skin Conditions and Treatments

      Minor Burns

       Wound Healing Process

The process of wound healing begins immediately after injury to restore skin
        integrity.
Local factors associated with delayed or otherwise poor healing include:
        Inadequate tissue perfusion and oxygenation
        Inadequate moisture
The presence of foreign bodies (e.g., glass, dirt), necrotic tissue, or infection Systemic
factors that can impair the healing process are:
        Advanced age (>60 years) Stress
        Inadequate nutrition
Medical conditions such as diabetes and obesity Immunocompromised conditions such as
        cancer Alcoholism
        Smoking
Certain medications (anticoagulants, antineoplastics, anti-rheumatics, steroids, NSAIDs,
        nicotine, and vasoconstrictors)

       When Burns Can Be Self-Managed

The factors determine whether the wound will heal with self-treatment or will require referral
        to a health care provider:
The depth of the injury into the skin and underlying tissues (grade I, and superficial
grade II wounds may be managed with self-care)
The cause of the injury (Some thermal burns and sunburns may be appropriate for self-
        treatment.) (Electric & chemical)
Timing (whether the injury is acute or chronic); minor acute wounds can be self treated.
        (Chronic wounds)

                                                                                                                                          97
