They are responsible for the grapefruit juice effect onthe
metabolism of a variety of drug
They inhibit some isoforms of cytochrome
P450 enzyme, preventing oxidative metabolism of certain
drugs, resulting in an elevated concentrationof drug in the
blood stream, increasing the risk of potentially serious side
effects.
*Avoid consumption of grape fruit juice when patients are
taking some prescribed oral medications
e.g. statins , antihistaminics,……
However they can increase the oral bioavailability ofother
pharmacological drugs (potential benefits)
