Resins and resin combinations

-They are insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol.
-They Burn with smoky flame (due to high carbon content).
-Chemically, they are very complex substances of different chemical
constituents:
Resinolic acids, resinophenol, resinol, esters or neutral inert compounds.

   • Resin ex: colophony, guaiacum
   • Oleoresin: resin + v.oil can be separated by steam distillation. Ex: Mastic
   • Gum-resin: gum + resin can be separated by boiling with water.
   • Oleo-gum-resin: v.oil + gum + resin. Ex: olibanum
   • Balsams: resinous substances containing balsamic acids. Ex: Benzoin

                                    Resins
                        Colophony (Rosin)
