Tropane alkaloids

• Tropane alkaloids are a well-recognized group of structurally related
natural products. The tropane alkaloids occur mainly in the plant family
Solanaceae, but are also found in other families e.g. convolvulaceae,
Erythroxylaceae, Discoriaceae and Amarylidaceae. Tropane nucleus
consists of seven-membered bicyclic ring with a nitrogenous bridge
between C-1 and C-5. Although it contains TWO asymmetric carbons
(1&5) yet it is optically inactive due to internal (or intramolecular)
   compensation.

• Tropane alkaloids are ester alkaloids which on hydrolysis yield an organic
acid and an amino alcohol as a base. Tropane, the parent base of the
alkaloids, consists of seven membered bicyclic ring with a nitrogenous bridge
   between C1 & C5.

The major tropane alkaloids of pharmacological and therapeutic importance
can be classified into two main groups.

I- Solanaceous tropane alkaloids.

II- Coca alkaloids.
