Establishing pH gradients

 Stable pH gradients are the keys to successful IEF.
The use of carrier ampholyte is the most common
and simplest means for forming pH gradients.

 Carrier ampholytes are mixtures of amphoteric
molecules:
1.Can react both as an acid as well as a base.
2.Organic buffer molecules giving closely spaced pH
values.
