Types of Chemical markers
LPS consists of a polysaccharide chain and a lipid
moiety which is responsible for the toxic effects.
Humans are able to produce antibodies against
endotoxins after exposure, but these are directed
at the polysaccharide chain and don’t protect
against a wide variety of endotoxins.
Injection of a small amount of endotoxin in
human volunteers produce fever, a decrease in
blood pressure, and activation of inflammation and
coagulation.
