Castor oil……
Cathartic effects (excessive fluid and electrolyte loss) leading to
dehydration. It is mainly used to evacuate the GIT contents prior to GIT
operations.
Warning
It shouldn't be used in pregnants as it may cause premature labor.
• It can erode intestinal villi or disorganize the microvillous surface of the
intestinal lumen so long term use leads to nutrient malabsorption.
• Dose :- adult: - 15-60 ml children (2-12 years) 5-15ml
N.B
• Castor oil can be misused to hasten delivery to induce premature
uterine contractions;
• however this is deadly since it can cause amniotic fluid embolism and
impaired health of the infant
