What causes asthma?

Asthma is caused by inhaling an
allergen that sets off the chain of
biochemical and tissue changes
leading to airway inflammation,
bronchoconstriction, and wheezing.

   Asthma in guidelines

     • Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways
causing recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness,
cough, and chest tightness, particularly at night or early in
the morning. During episodes, there is variable airway
obstruction, often reversible spontaneously or with
treatment. There is also increased bronchial hyper
responsiveness to a variety of stimuli.
