Tablets
They're solid dosage forms containing drug with or without excipients and prepared by
compression.
It's the most popular dosage form, accounting for 70% of all dosage forms produced.
Advantages of Tablets
1. Accuracy of the dosage
2. Ease of administration
3. More stable than liquid dosage forms
4. Easy to transport in bulk and easily carried by the patient
5. The release rate of the drug can be controlled
6. Tablets can be mass-produced simply and quickly, therefore manufacturing cost is
lower than other dosage forms
Size and Weight of Tablets
• Diameter: 6 mm – 14 mm
• Weight:
o 6 mm → 60 mg – 120 mg
o 14 mm → 800 mg – 1000 mg
Notes:
• Thickness must be compatible with the diameter.
• If the weight of the drug exceeds 600 mg, manufacturers prefer capsules instead of
tablets because they are easier to swallow.
Tablet Press (Compression Unit)
The tablet press is the basic mechanical unit of all tablets.
It includes:
a) Hopper – stores the powder to be compressed
b) Die – controls the shape and size of the tablet
c) Two punches – for tablet pressing
Notes:
• The die cavity can be adjusted according to the desired shape and size.
