hydrolysis yields glucose and safranal. Safranal is largely
responsible for the characteristic odour of the drug.
Uses:
Saffron is chiefly employed as a colouring and flavourig
agent, stimulant and antispasmodic. It is also usefull as
emmenagogue and in case of amenorrhea.
Feverfew BP 2008
Definition:
Feverfew consists of the dried, whole or fragmented aerial
parts of Tanacetum parthenium, family Asteraceae. It contains
not less than 0.20 % of parthenolide (C15H20O3; Mr 248.3),
calculated with reference to the dried drug.
Constituents:
1- 0.7% Sesqiterpene lactones predominantly parthenolide
which accounts for the therapeutic action.
2- 0.07 - 0.4% of volatile oil.
Action & Uses:
Feverfew decreases the severity and incidence of
migraine. This action is due to parthenolide which inhibits the
release of certain chemicals, including serotonin and some
inflammatory mediators.
