Macroscopic Characters:
Flowers are nearly sessile up to 8 mm long. The calyx is
formed of 5 united sepals, tubular, hairy, grayish-blue to bluish-
violet, about 5 mm long with 10 to 13 ribs.
The corolla is bilabiate, hairy, dark blue; about 8 mm long, the
upper lip is bilobed while the lower is trilobed.
The stamens are 4, epipetalous and didynamous.
The ovary is superior, bicarpellary and tetralocular. Lavender
has fragrant aromatic odour and aromatic, bitter somewhat
camphoraceous taste.
Microscopic Characters:
Important types of glandular and non glandular hairs are
present on the corolla and calyx.
1- Labiaceous glandular hairs formed of unicellular stalk and 4 to
8 celled head are present on both calyx and corolla.
2- Glandular hairs formed of unicellular head and bicellular stalk
its basal cell being long, knotted and the other cell is short and
cylindrical, are present on inner surface of the corolla and the
throat.
3- The anthers are covered with whip-shaped, unicellular
non-glandular hairs.
The pollen grains are almost rounded with 6 germ-pored.
