shake with 2 ml of dilute solution of ammonium hydroxide; an orange-
red colour is produced in the aqueous layer.
2. Chromatography.
Frangula Bark
Botanical origin: Frangula bark consists of the dried, whole or
fragmented bark of the stems and branches of Rhamnus frangula family
Rhamnaceae, collected at least one year before being employed
medicinally. It contains not less than 7.0% of glucofrangulins.
Macroscopic characters :
The bark occurs in single or double quills which are
usually of smaller size than those of cascara .
-The outer surface :
Has a purplish cork and transversely elongated whitish
lenticels. On removing the outer cork cells by scraping, a
dark crimson inner cork is exposed.
-The inner surface :
Is reddish-yellow to dark brown, finely longitudinally
striated.
-The fracture:
Short in the outer part and slightly fibrous in the inner part
