Arnica Flowers BP 2008
Definition:
Arnica flower consists of the whole or partially broken, dried
flower-heads of Arnica montana L, family Asteraceae.
It contains not less than 0.40 per cent m/m of total sesquiterpene
lactones expressed as dihydrohelenalin tiglate, calculated with
reference to the dried drug.
It is found in the meadows of the lower mountain slopes of
central Europe.
Macroscopic Characters:
The dried flower-head is somewhat obconical masses, about 20 mm
in diameter and about 15 mm deep, and has a peduncle of 2 cm to 3
cm in length.
The receptacle is flat or slightly convex.
The involucre consists of 18 to 24 elongated lanceolate bracts, with
acute apices, arranged in one or two rows: the bracts, 8 mm to
about 10 mm long, are green with yellowish-green external hairs if
examined under a lens
Ligulate Florets:
Present in single row of 16 to 20 florets, each is 20 mm to 30 mm
long.
