What is inside the column-The stationary phase

              Column Packings in HPLC

What are the optimal criteria for HPLC stationary phase?

❑ Packings are rigid, very fine with particle size 3-10 µm.

❑ Pore size: 70 to 300 (Superficially porous) to minimize band

broadening due to stagnant pools of mobile phase.

❑ High surface area: 50 to 250 m2/g, efficient separation

performance.

❑ Spherical particle shape, produces homogeneous stationary

phase (high bed stability).

❑ High chemical stability.

❑ High load capacity and recovery rates. 164
