1,4-butane diol breaks down in human body to form gamma hydroxyl
butyric acid (GHB). While 1,5-pentane diol is safer .

since 1990s GHB has become a drug of abuse in youths due to its
euphoric, sedative&anabolic effects.
GHB is used in Europe for treatment of alcohol dependence & opiates
dependence
