Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
• Habitat: Origin unknown, likely Near East. Cultivated widely.
• Chemical composition: Volatile oil (2-6%), Caffeic acid derivatives, Flavonoids, Fatty oil (30%).
• Effects: Said to have an expectorant, mildly spasmolytic, and antibacterial effect based on the essential
oil (main constituent trans-anethol). Data is empirical, and no recent studies are available.
• Indications (Commission E): Common cold; Cough/bronchitis; Fevers and colds; Inflammation of
the mouth and pharynx; Dyspeptic complaints; Loss of appetite.
