Lavender Oil

Definition
It consists of the essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the fresh flowering tops
of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. or of L. intermedia Loisel (Lamiaceae).
Major chemical constituents
Contains: linalyl acetate (25–46%), linalool (20–45%), terpinen-4-ol (1.2– 6.0%).

Medicinal uses
Symptomatic treatment of anxiety by inhalation therapy, restlessness and to induce
relaxation.
Precautions
No information is available on the general precautions or on precautions concerning drug
interactions; drug and laboratory test interactions; carcinogenesis, mutagenesis,
impairment of fertility; or teratogenic effects during pregnancy.

                                   Valerian

Definition
It consists of the subterranean parts of Valeriana officinalis L. (sensu lato)
(Valerianaceae) including the rhizomes, roots, and stolons, carefully dried at a
temperature below 40 °C.
Major chemical constituents
Iridoids: valepotriates.
Volatile oil: (-)-bornyl isovalerenate and isovalerenic acid.
Sesquiterpenes: valerenic acid (0.1-0.9%), 2-hydroxyvalerenic acid, 2-acetoxy-valerenic
acid
Pyridine alkaloids (traces).
Caffeic acid derivatives: chlorogenic acid.
