Medicinal uses
As a mild sedative and sleep-promoting agent. The drug is often used as a milder alternative
or a possible substitute for stronger synthetic sedatives, such as the benzodiazepines, in the
treatment of states of nervous excitation and anxiety-induced sleep disturbances.
Contraindications
It should not be used during pregnancy or lactation.
Drug Interactions
Valerian may enhance the effects of other central nervous system (CNS) depressants.
Experimental studies in animals have demonstrated that its sedative action can be
intensified when administered alongside barbiturates or benzodiazepines. Although there
is no conclusive evidence showing increased CNS depression when Valerian is taken with
alcohol, concurrent use is not advised. Due to its calming properties, individuals should
refrain from operating machinery or driving vehicles for several hours after
consuming Valerian-containing preparations.
Pregnancy
Use of Valerian during pregnancy or in nursing mothers is not recommended.
