Advantages of local drug
delivery to the lung
• The dose of the drug required for local treatment can be
significantly reduced.
– For example, orally administered salbutamol at 2–4 mg of dose is
therapeutically equivalent to 100–200 μg of salbutamol administered
directly into the lung. (>100 times reduction in dose)
• SO less systemic drug side effects
• Escape drug metabolism
• High local concentrations
• Rapid clinical response.
• The possibility of simultaneous oxygen therapy and
pharmacotherapy

Barriers to pulmonary drug
delivery
• Airway geometry
• Localized high humidity
• Mucociliary clearance
• Alveolar Macrophages.
