Characteristics of SN2 reaction

✓ An SN2 reaction is a single-step reaction that
   occurs without pause (concerted) .

✓Rate of the reaction depends upon
   concentration of both reactants (second-order
   reaction).
          Reaction rate = k [alkyl halide][Nu]

✓ The rate determining step (slow) involves
   formation of the transition state.

✓ The SN2 reaction is known as a stereospecific
   reaction.

      Factors affecting the SN2 reaction
1. Alkyl group reactivity

• There is a steric effect in an SN2 reaction.
• SN2 reactivity: CH3> 1o > 2o > 3o
