From Alkyne lecture: in synthesis of alkynes

• Higher alkynes are synthesized by alkylation of
  acetylene or terminal alkynes.

• Removal of the acidic hydrogen of terminal alkyne
  using sodamide in liquid ammonia followed by
  reaction with primary alkyl halides ONLY. (NEXT
  LECT.)

   Unimolecular nucleophilic substitution
