Rhizomes and adventitious roots of Valeriana officinalis family Valerianaceae.
Constituents:
1- V.O.; Oxygenated (Esters) and Non-oxygenated (sesquiterpenes).
2- Epoxy-iridoid esters called valeporiates.
3- Alkaloids (catinine, valerine and quaternary).
Uses:
1- Sedative in hysteria and other nervous disorders due to valeporiates.
2- Carminative and antispasmodic due to V.O.
Valeporiates hydrolyse by alkalis to isovaleric acid with bad odour, thus if
the powder has a bad odour it should be rejected.
