Preparation:
1- Electrolytic oxidation of glucose in the presence of calcium carbonate.
2- Ca gluconate is also prepared on a commercial scale by fermentation of 25-40%

solution of glucose using some bacteria in the presence of calcium carbonate.
Properties:
 It is decomposed by mineral acids and incompatible with soluble sulfates,

carbonates, bicarbonates, citrates, tartarates, salicylates and benzoates.
Uses:
1- Nontoxic source of calcium (oral, IM. and I.V.).
2- Calcium therapy is indicated in conditions such as parathyroid deficiency, general
calcium deficiency.
Doses:
1g orally 3 times daily or by intravenous infusion at intervals of 1-3 days.

Ferrous Gluconate

Preparation:
 Ferrous gluconate is prepared by treating hot solution of ferrous sulfate with hot

    solution of calcium gluconate.
Uses:
 Ferrous gluconate is classified as hematinic and is employed orally or by injection

    in iron deficiency anemia.
Dose:
 300 mg three times/day. It causes less gastric distress than other ferrous salts.
