Hydrolysis of salicin

         Salicyl alcohol CH2OH

                          OH + Glucose
                          Saligenin

                          (Phenolic)+ FCl3 +ve color

                          CH2OH

Salicin O + Glucose

                             HOH2C

                          Saliretin (ether)

[Condensation product of two molecules of saligenin]

                                                                                                                                                                                                                      4

The natural Salicin showed difference in bioavailability and
pharmacokinetics properties from Aspirin

What is the difference between aspirin and Salicin?

 Salicin does not damage the gastrointestinal mucosa, no gastric
hemorrhage (stomach bleeding), no gastrointestinal ulcers,

 Salicin maintains a longer steady state plasma concentration
   than Aspirin.
 Salicin not effective for blood thinning.

Chemical tests for identity of Salicin
To a few mg of Salicin in a porcelain dish add separately one
       drop of each of:
 Conc. H2SO4, a red color is produced which disappears on
       adding few drops of water.
 Erdmann's reagent, a red color is produced.
 Froehd's reagent, a violet color is produced.
 Mandalin's reagent, a purple red color is produced.

People should not take salicin if they have asthma, diabetes, gout;
also contraindicated are children under 16, and pregnant

   • Salix ® Tablets
( Salicin 200 mg + vit. C 250 mg + Zn 1.6 mg)
Used as anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory medication.
