In addition to acting directly as estrogens, isoflavonoids might modulate
the action of endogenous estrogens by competitive inhibition of estrogen
receptors. Genistein binds with estrogen receptors, preventing the
estrogen from binding and initiating cancer cells(as estrogen increases
risk for certain cancers).
Genistein seems to reduce the risk for some hormone related
cancers, principally breast cancer.
Genistein also shows synergistic behavior with well-known
anticancer drugs, such as adriamycin, docetaxel, and tamoxifen,
suggesting a potential role in combination therapy.
5- Anthocyanidins and their glycosides (Anthocyanins)
X-
Anthocyanidin
Anthocyanidins are ionic oxonium salt, so they are soluble in polar
solvents.
They are responsible for the red, blue and purple colors of flowers,
fruits and
leaves. The color of anthocyanins and anthocyanidins is pH-
dependant.
Cyanidin-3-glucoside
Source:
Is the major anthocyanin found in colored legumes and berries.
exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antitumor, and
antimutagenic activities.
It also enhances and improve memory, cognition, and
inhibits LDL oxidation.
