Spectrofluorimetry
Pharmaceutical Applications
• Naturally fluorescent drugs are determined by direct fluorometric analysis. Examples are
riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), tetracycline, warfarin, fluoroquinolone
antibiotics, some alkaloids (morphine, reserpine and quinine) and some NSAIDs such as
nabumetone, naproxen and piroxicam.
• Some drugs can be derivatized to give fluorescent substances. Examples of fluorogenic
reagents used for derivatization reactions are fluorescamine, dansyl chloride and o-
phthalaldehyde (OPA).
• Some drugs interact with fluorescent compounds such as eosin, acriflavine and some
fluorescent nanoparticles. The interaction results in quenching of fluorescence of the
reagent. The quenching is proportional to concentration of the drug.
• Some metal ions such as Zn2+ and Al3+ can be determined by complexation with
8-hydroxyquinoline giving fluorescent complexes which can de measured.
