Band Broadening
Band broadening occurs due to:
• Longitudinal diffusion of the analyte molecules
• the random-walk mechanism for the migration of
analyte molecules through a column

• A chromatogram is a plot of detector response versus elution
time
• The positions of the peaks on the time axis is used to identify
the components of the sample ( qualitative Analysis )
• the areas under the peaks or peaks height provides a
quantitative measure of the amount of each species.
