Lesson 13: Guru HarRai Ji
HarRai Ji was born on February 26, 1630 at Kiratpur in Punjab. His father
was Baba Gurditta and mother was Mata Nihal Ji. Guru Hargobind Ji was
Guru HarRai Ji’s Dada Ji.
Guru HarRai Ji had two sons, Baba Ram Rai Ji, and Harkrishan Ji. He also
had a daughter, Bibi Roop Ji.
Guru HarRai ji continued the martial tradition of Guru Hargobind Singh Ji.
He maintained a cavalry of 2200 horses but devoted himself to the
peaceful ways of living. This made his Sikhs great horse riders and fighters.
Guru Ji nominated his younger son Harkrishan as his successor because he
was disappointed in his eldest son Baba Ram Rai, who had changed one
Gurbani word to please the Mughal Emperor. He taught us that Gurbani is
Divine and cannot be changed by humans.
Guru HarRai Ji was kind-hearted. He wanted to help everyone, so he opened
a hospital at Kiratpur Sahib, where everyone could go and get treatment. It
was free and everyone was cured. That would be probably the world’s first
dispensary of medicines. When the Mughal emperor’s son got sick, no one
could cure him, so he came to Guru HarRai Ji. Guru HarRai Ji gave him
medicine, and the emperor’s son became well. Guru Ji also built a zoo in
Kiratpur Sahib where he had all kinds of animals. Guru HarRai Ji’s Parkash
Purab is celebrated as Sikh Eco Day. Guru HarRai Ji was our Seventh Guru
from 1644 to 1661.
