Lesson 16: Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Couldn’t Enter
Harimandar Sahib
Soon after he was found by Makhan Shah, the Guru and a few Sikhs
traveled to Amritsar to pay respects at Harimandar Sahib. However on his
arrival at this sacred shrine, the Guru was not allowed to enter the main
section of the complex. The doors of Harimandar were suddenly shut on
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Remember Prithi Chand, Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s elder brother? He had
declared himself to be the sixth guru. He also had his son Meharban write
hymns like Guru Nanak. After Guru Hargobind Ji left Harimandar Sahib in
1629, the Masands of Amritsar took control of Harimandar Sahib. They had
accepted Prithia as their Guru, who was followed by Meharban as the
seventh guru and Harji as the eighth guru.
Bhai Gurdas Ji called him hypocrite and black-faced mIxw. It sounds like
mean, right? It was under the instructions of Harji, the impostor guru of
the time that the doors of Golden Temple were closed to Guru Tegh
Bahadur Ji. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji left without going inside the Harimandar
Sahib. He established the city of Chak Nanaki (Anandpur Sahib) as a center
for Sikhism.
When Guru Gobind Singh Ji became the tenth Guru, he forbade his Khalsa
to do anything to do with the mIxy. He sent Bhai Mani Singh from Anandpur
Sahib to Amritsar to take control of Harimandar Sahib back from the
Masands in 1699.
