Lesson 19: Guru Gobind Singh Ji Sacrifices
Whole Family
The Second Battle of Anandpur in 1704 was the one that changed the
future of the Guru and his family. The Mughal forces held a siege on
Anandpur Fort. After eight months of keeping Guru Ji and his Sikhs locked
inside the fort without any food or supplies, there still was no easy victory
for the Mughals. They were frustrated. Aurangzeb sent a message to Guru
Gobind Singh Ji. He said that he swears by Koran that Guru Ji and his
Sikhs will not be attacked if they leave Anandpur fort. Guru Ji did not
trust him, but he accepted the offer and left at night. It was cold rainy
night in December.
As Guru Ji expected it, Sikhs were attacked while they were leaving
Anandpur Fort. Guru Ji’s family got separated. Mata Gujari and two
younger Sahibzadas Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were with Gangu, their
servant. He took them to his house. But he betrayed them and turned them
in to the Nawab of Sirhind the next day. He received a reward for the
capture of the Sahibzaday. The two Sahibzaday were buried alive into a
wall a few days later because they refused to convert to Islam. Mata Gujri
Ji died when she heard about her grandsons’ death.
A merchant Seth Todar Mal of Sirhind offered to buy a piece of land to
cremate the bodies of the younger Sahibzaday and Mata Gujri Ji by
covering the ground with gold coins. Todar Mal respectfully cremated the
bodies of Guru Gobind Singh's mother and young sons. It is said that
considering how much Todar Mal paid for the small piece of land at that
time, that piece of land is perhaps the most expensive piece of land in the
world even today.
Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, two older sons of the
Guru along with other Sikh soldiers were martyred in the Battle of
