Lesson 18: Guru Gobind Singh Ji
When Gobind Rai Ji was born, it was as if a splendid Divine Light shined in
the darkness. Pir Bhikan Shah a Muslim Pir bowed in that direction, and
traveled with his followers and reached Patna Sahib in Bihar. He was born
to Mata Gujri in December 22, 1666. His father was our Ninth Guru, Guru
Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Pir Bhikan Shah wanted to see child Gobind
Rai. He brought with him two pots of mithaaee
one from the shop of a Hindu and the other
from the shop of a Muslim. He offered both
to the child. The child smiled and placed one
hand on each pot. The Pir bowed with humility
and respect to the new Guru of all humanity.
When Pir was asked why he offered two pots
of Mithaee; he admitted that he was testing the Child to see who will he
favor- Hindus or Muslims. But he was delighted to see that the Guru would
not prefer one over the other. He would treat everyone with the same love.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji brought Gobind Rai Ji and Mata Gujri Ji to Punjab in
1670 and later relocated with them to Chakk Nanaki (Anandpur Sahib) in
March 1672. Gobind Rai Ji received his education in Punjabi, Sanskrit and
Persian. He also received training in martial arts, archery and horse riding.
He grew up to be strong and energetic.
He was a poet of the highest order. He composed several compositions
including Chandi Di Var- his first composition in Punjabi written in 1684.
Guru Ji also wrote Zafarnamah, Bachittar Natak, Chaupai, Akal Ustat, Jaap
Sahib, Tav-Prasad Savaiye, Chandi di Var and many more compositions in
