Lesson 21: Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gives Us the Eternal Guru
Guru Gobind Singh Ji was attacked by two Afghans. He had made a good
recovery. He was feeling better. Several days later Guru Ji was working on
his bow. He tugged at the bow hard and the wounds burst open and caused
profuse bleeding. He was treated again, but it became clear to Guru Ji that
his time was near. He prepared the Sangat for his departure.
Khalsas gathered. He opened the Granth Sahib, placed five paise and
bowed to it as his successor, Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Ji walked around
Guru Granth Sahib and proclaimed, "O Khalsa Jio, let one who wishes to see
me, see the Guru Granth. Obey the Granth Sahib. It is the visible body of
the Gurus. And let one who desires to meet me, search me in the Shabad."
The Guru then left for his heavenly abode on October 7, 1708. He was 42
years old. Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s body left the Sikhs, but he left an
Eternal Guru with us- Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Now when we do Ardas, we
sing this Dohra with this message.

"With the orders of the Immortal Being, the Panth was created. All the Sikhs are
enjoined to accept the Granth as their Guru. Consider the Guru Granth as embodiment
of the Gurus. Those who want to meet Prabh-Waheguru can find Him in its hymns. The
Khalsa shall rule, and its opponents will be no more. Those separated will unite and all
the devotees shall be saved."
