Lesson 22: Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Contributions
Guru Nanak Dev Ji had started Sikhi- a path of living a life that matters,
and Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave the Sikhs the final form. He changed the
history of the world by infusing the spirit of Chardikala in his Sikhs.
Chardikala is a unique word in Punjabi. It means ‘rising energy’. Chardikala
means a positive and optimistic attitude to life and the future. A person
who has Chardikala has no fear, jealousy or enmity in his mind. Chardikala is
a Sikh’s absolute faith in One Akal-Purkh that everything will work out.
Sikhs pray for Chardikala every day.
Wherever the Sikhs go, they take their Sikhi values with them. The world
knows that Sikhs will stand for the basic freedoms given to all humans no
matter what their color, their gender and their religion is. Guru Gobind
Singh Ji’s gifts are many and each one has the power of transformation.
1. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was a Saint-Soldier and a poet. He infused
martial spirit in the people by soul-inspiring and heart-stirring heroic
poetry. We Sikhs read his poetry and get life infused in us.
2. He took up the sword to fight against oppression of the contemporary
rulers. Sikhs do the same.
3. He added the Bani of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji to the Adi Granth. Bhai
Mani Singh Ji scribed or wrote it.
4. He installed Sri Guru Granth Sahib as the Eternal Guru of the Sikhs,
ending the tradition of human Guruship.
5. On Visakhi day in 1699 he created a new Order in the Sikh tradition.
The Order is known as the Khalsa Panth.
6. He gave us the Panj Kakkaar- Kes, Kangha, Kada, Kirpan and
Kachhehra. These Kakkaars give us our unique identity that makes us
