Lesson 5: Chaar Sahibzaday
Our Tenth Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had four sons. We call
them the Chaar Sahibzaday or the Four Princes. Their names are
Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, Baba Zoravar Singh Ji,
and Baba Fateh Singh Ji. We call them Baba because even thought
they were children, they were brave and they behaved like
grownups.
In the 17th century, India was ruled by Mughal rulers who were not
good to common people. They believed that only Islam faith teaches
how to live a good life. If you were not a Muslim, you were not a
good person and you didn’t have a right to live. But Sikh Gurus
believed in the freedom of religion.
The Mughal rulers did not like that Sikhs were not following their
orders. They wanted to kill all Sikhs. They hunted Sikhs.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji was our tenth Guru. He never started a war,
but he had to fight many started by the Mughals. Guru Gobind Singh
Ji had four sons. We call them Chaar Sahibzaday or the Four
Princes.
Sahibzada Ajit Singh was the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji
and Mata Sundari Ji. He was born at Paonta Sahib on January 26,
1687. His name meant ‘the invincible’. He was taught to read
religious texts, philosophy, history, horse riding, swordsmanship and
archery at Anandpur Sahib. He grew up to be a handsome, strong,
brave, intelligent and a fearless leader. He took Amrit on Visakhi
Day in 1699. He led many battles starting when he was barely twelve
years old. His first battle was with the Ranghars in Pothohar where
he protected the Sikh Sangat from the looting they had suffered.
Sahibzada Jujhar Singh was the second son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
He was born to Mata Jito Ji in Anandpur Sahib on March 14, 1691.
