Lesson 6: Shaheedi of the Chhotay Sahibzaday

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was living in Anandpur Sahib with his family

and many Sikhs. Hill Rajas complained to Aurangzeb that Guru

Gobind Singh Ji had moved into Anandpur Sahib. Aurangzeb sent
Mughal armies to surround Anandpur Sahib in May 1705. The siege

lasted for many months. Finally, Aurangzeb offered Guru Ji a safe
passage out of Anandpur Sahib. Guru Ji along with family and a few

Sikhs came out of the fort on a December night. It was a stormy
night in December. It rained heavily. As Guru Ji came out, the

Mughal forces attacked. There was chaos. The Sirsa River flooded.

Many Sikhs and things were consumed in the river waters. Guru Ji,
two older Sahibzadas and several Sikhs went towards Chamkaur

Sahib. While leaving Sri Anandpur Sahib because of the problems

with the Mughal forces, two Chhotay Sahibzaday, Sahibzada
Zoravar Singh, Sahibzada Fateh Singh and grandmother Mata Gujri

Ji were separated from the Guru Gobind Singh Ji and older
               Sahibzaday.

In the darkness, Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzaday were

separated from everyone else. They were wet, cold and hungry. They
found their butler Gangu. Mata Gujri felt happy. He took them to his

house near Morinda. But later on he would betray Mata Ji’s trust

and put their life in danger. While at his house, Gangu saw that Mata
Gujri Ji had some money and gold coins in a pouch. He stole that

pouch in the night. When Mata Gujri Ji asked him about the pouch,

he became furious. He went to tell the Mughal ruler, Suba of
Sirhind that the Sahibzadas were staying with him. The Mughals

wanted to get rid of Guru Ji’s children because they were too brave

and they would not listen to the Mughal rulers. The kings aren’t
happy when someone does not listen to them. There was reward on

capturing them. That greedy Gangu wanted the reward on
               Sahibzadas’ capture also.
