small fort, the Kachi Garhi (k~cI gVHI) at Chamkaur the next morning.
Mughals followed Guru Ji and reached the Kachi garhi at Chamkaur
Sahib too. The Sikhs came out in groups of five to fight the enemy.
They would kill many before falling themselves.
On the morning of December 7, 1705, Sahibzada Ajit Singh and
Sahibzada Jujhar Singh asked Guru Ji to send them to fight. Guru
Ji knew that they will not return, but he got them ready with his
own hands and first sent Sahibzada Ajit Singh along with Bhai
Mohkam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Sahib Singh and another
Sikh. Sahibzada fought bravely and fell after killing many from the
other side.
Guru Ji and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh saw him fighting bravely. Then
Sahibzada Jujhar Singh left along with four other Sikhs. They
fought like lions. Guru Ji saw his own sons falling in battle.
There were only six lefts- Guru Ji himself, Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai
Dharam Singh, Bhai Sant Singh, Bhai Maan Singh and Bhai Sangat
Singh. They knew that Guru Ji was not safe there. They insisted and
ordered that Guru Ji leave the Kachi garhi and continue to lead the
Sikh nation from somewhere else. It was Hukam from the Panj
Piaray, and Guru Ji had to obey it.
Guru Ji was asked to change his robes with Bhai Sangat Singh. Bhai
Sangat Singh dressed as the Guru and remained behind along with
Bhai Sant Singh to guard the garhi. Guru Ji and rest of Sikhs left.
Guru Ji did not leave quietly. He clapped and told the enemy that
the Guru was leaving. They fought the enemy on the way but
reached Machhivara Jungle safely.
The Battle of Chamkaur lasted only three days, but it infused a
strong faith in the Sikhs. Now there are several Gurdwaras in this
area that commemorate the Shaheedi of the Sikhs. Gurdwara
Qatalgarh (kqlgVH) is at the spot where the two older Sahibzadas
