Lesson 8: Guru Gobind Singh Ji
Leaves Chamkaur
Machhivara (mwCIvwVw) was a small village near Chamkaur. Guru Gobind
Singh Ji arrived here after leaving Chamkaur on the night of
December 7, 1705. Here Bhai Mani Singh, Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai
Dharam Singh joined him as Guru Ji had planned. He later moved to
the house of Gulaba, a Masand, inside the village.
Two Pathan brothers Ghani Khan and Nabi Khan, who were horse
dealers and had previously visited Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur,
met him here. They helped him to travel to town of Dina disguised as
Uch Da Pir (auc dw pIr), a Muslim holy man.
There, Guru Ji wrote Zafarnamah (the Letter of Victory) to
Emperor Aurangzeb. He sent Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai Dharam
Singh to give the Zafarnamah to Aurangzeb. The Emperor developed
a great respect for Guru Ji after reading the Zafarnamah in which
Guru Ji had told him that his fighting tactics were not that of
soldiers but that of deceit. He invited Guru Ji to meet him.
Guru Ji enlisted a few hundred Sikhs as soldiers once again. They
marched westwards. Guru Ji and the Sikhs were pursued by the
Mughal army at Khidrana. The battle on December 29, 1705 was
hard, but Mughal forces gave up and retreated. The most important
part was played by the Forty Sikhs who had abandoned Guru Ji at
the Anandpur Fort. When they reached their homes, their wives
were upset that they had betrayed Guru Ji and saved their own
lives. Mai Bhago, one of the brave women took them back to Guru Ji.
They all died fighting in this battle. Guru Ji called them Chaali
Muktay- the forty emancipated ones. That city now is called
Mukatsar.
