What does the Word “Rehras” Mean?

The word Rehras occurs at multiple places in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and has
slightly different shades of meanings in different contexts. This word is

probably from Persian expression rah-i-rast which means ‘the right way’.

             1. The word Rehras occurs only once in Rehras Sahib, in a Shabad written by the
fourth Nanak, Guru Ramdas Ji. It says

gurmiq nwmu myrw pRwn sKweI hir kIriq hmrI rihrwis] (SGGS p10)

Meaning: Through the Guru's Teachings, the Naam is my breath of life. Singing

Waheguru’s Praise is my way of life ||1||Pause||

             2. But in SGGS there are other quotes with the word Rehras.

swhu pwiqswhu sBh hir kw kIAw siB jn kau Awie krih rihrws] (SGGS p305)

Meaning: Kings and emperors are made by the Waheguru; even they all come and pay tribute to
                                                Waheguru’s humble servant.

             3. Here Rehras has been interpreted as request or Ardas (in Mahan Kosh).

rihrwis hmwrI gur gopwlw] (SGGS p 886)

Meaning: Our tribute is to Waheguru; who takes care of all.

             4. This quote is from a Bhatt poet describing the transfer of Gurgaddi from Guru
Nanak Sahib to Guru Angad Sahib. Here Rehras has been interpreted as Greeting

             or Namaskar.
guir cyly rihrws kIeI nwnik slwmiq QIvdY] (SGGS 966)

Meaning: When Guru Nanak Sahib was still alive, he bowed in reverence and paid tribute to his
             disciple Bhai Lehna Ji.
