Chapter 10: Anand Sahib
Anand means constant bliss and happiness. Anand Sahib Bani was written by the
third Guru, Guru Amardas Ji. It is in Sri Guru Granth Sahib on page 917 in Raag
Ramkali. It has forty stanzas that center around how we can obtain bliss.
Anand Bani is a constant reminder for Sikhs to be in bliss. Our morning prayer
includes Anand Sahib; our evening prayer includes Anand Sahib. All of our Sikh
ceremonies- birth, Amrit Sanchar, marriage, death or any other occasion
concludes with the Anand Sahib Bani.
Many names of important places and events have Anand in them because this
word instills Chardikala in us. Our marriage ceremony is called Anand Karaj
(Blissful union). Guru Gobind Singh Ji established Anandpur Sahib (City of Bliss)
that is Khalsa Panth’s common place. Imagine Sikhs live in a city of bliss, wake up
to pray about bliss, go to sleep dreaming of bliss! Guru Ji wanted to ensure that
at the center of our lives and all activities is the feeling of Chardikala.
In the first line of Anand Sahib, Guru Ji explains that a person can get Anand
from Guru only.

I am in bliss, O my mother, for I have found my True Guru. (GGS-917)
Guru Ji explains in forty different ways how to live in bliss and to transform
one’s personality. The Sikhs must practice guru’s word to become completely
aligned with Divine. Guru Sahib Ji invites all Sikhs to sing the sublime Gurbani of
the true Guru. We are encouraged to detach from falsehoods and just listen and
embrace the message of Gurbani. Guru Sahib addresses the mind and the body
parts- tongue, eyes, ears, feet, and body- so that they are directed to the right
path of Divine.
Finally, in the end, Guru Sahib says that He has obtained bliss and all of his
companions, who listen to Anand, will also get this bliss. By listening to Anand, all
problems, pains, sadness, tension will vanish. You will experience Waheguru
