Chapter 14: Headings in Sri Guru Granth Sahib-isrlyK
A lot of information is given in the headings. Here is a basic heading in Sri Guru
Granth Sahib.
Awsw mhlw 1] Aasa Mahalla Pehla
The First word names the Raag. A raag is a set of rules on how to build a musical
melody. The next part of the heading is Mahalla. Mahalla indicates the Guru who
wrote the Bani. In this case it is Guru Nanak Dev Ji because it says ‘Mahalla
Pehla’.
Here is another example with more words in the heading.

Raag Maajh, Chau-Paday, First House, Mahalla Chautha
The First words name the Raag. A raag is a set of rules on how to build a musical
melody. The next part of the heading is Chaupaday. Chaupada means 4 stanzas or
verses. There is a number at the end of each stanza.
Another part of this heading is Ghar. Ghar means house in Punjabi, but in the
heading it tells the number of beats it is sung in. Ghar Pehla (1) is Daadra Taal
which is a cycle of 6 beats. There are 17 Ghar mentioned in SGGS.
Next part in this heading is Mahalla. This indicates the Guru who wrote the Bani.
In this case it is Guru Ram Das Ji's Bani because it says ‘Mahalla Chautha’. This
will help you remember whose Bani it is.
Let’s look at one more example that has more information in the heading.
